naturalis is a national biodiversity research institution in the Netherlands. It was founded in Leiden by King William I. its history can be traced back to 1820. The project covers an area of about 38000 square meters, of which the repaired part accounts for 18000 square meters and the new part accounts for 20000 square meters.
the scheme integrates the old and new buildings of naturalis center in a sustainable way, and sets different functions in a specific volume
the exterior of the exhibition hall is covered with horizontally stacked stones, imitating the appearance of geological structure. In the long process of change, the rock formation has formed natural crystals, shining with beautiful brilliance. White concrete relief decorative belt is embedded in the middle of the rock layer, which is composed of 263 panels, bringing a silky smooth appearance.
atrium space connects all parts of the building, including existing offices and warehouses, as well as new museums and laboratories. The design of the atrium adopts a three-dimensional concrete structure, and integrates oval, triangular and hexagonal elements in the facade.
inside the museum, tord Boontje, a Dutch designer famous for lighting, furniture and fabric design, created a series of eye-catching decorative walls for the space, which are composed of about 100 color panels of different sizes, depicting exquisite flowers, plants and animals in the form of photography and murals, showing the wonders of the natural world.
