The history of a plate, dish and service tray - from antique elegance to modern day luxury

A dish, plate and service tray have been used to serve or present meat, fish and fruit over the centuries.  An implement used to free the hands of humans whilst they enjoy their food. Mud, bamboo and woven wicker were used by our ancestors to make and construct these serving platters.

These inexpensive materials are still in use today. Pottery plates and dishes have been found in some historical remains dating back to 2000 BC.

The skilled craftsmanship of the Phoenician metal artisans worked in copper, tin and silver, making serving bowls around the areas of the Eastern Mediterranean. These serving bowls were used within there palaces at parties and banquets for entertaining. They were not just serving items but also help display the wealth and elegant lifestyle the owners had achieved.

 round tray with engraved pattern

This exquisite round tray was hand-made by an ancient master metal worker.  It was even decorated with the geometric pattern resembling a heptagonal star, which had been proved by mathematician Gauss that drawing with a ruler and gauge could not form the regular heptagon pattern. The accuracy of this hand engraving was achieved without the use of a modern laser jet.

This luminous bowl was made using the laborious and time-consuming composition of the cast mosaic glass technique.

Whilst the artisans of Roman found methods to make glass, the Asian workers of the East had been making porcelain trays and ceramic dishes for centuries that were used within the household.

Wooden materials such as walnut, teak, olive and magnolia wood are very popular in western culture. Special treatments are then added and applied to the wood to give them a rustic style or farmhouse look.  Two and three tier serving trays were created to be used within restaurants during weddings and receptions.

With the coming of the industrial revolution more economical man-made materials were introduced. These materials could be formed, made and mass-produced to serve as plates and dishes for serving breakfast, lunch or dinner, in or outside the home. Compared to metals, these materials were lightweight. Now we have laminated paper, cardboard, plastic, melamine, acrylic, fiberglass and aluminum serving trays and plates that are popular during holidays or events such as Christmas, Easter and Halloween. Whilst the extra-large size, such as a 24 inch or 30 inch platters, with handles, are mostly likely used to serve beverages such as coca cola and drinks for a BBQ with crawfish and oysters, the medium size 20 inch rectangular ottoman serving trays. The 16 inch square are used for serving coffee, cocktails or tea on bar tops or coffee tables. Considering the cost of the large size serving trays, a personalized design is not essential. However a “Hostess” who wants to make an impression to her guests will look for something different and stylish to leave a lasting impression.
